Jayville Terminal, Switching Layout

  • Hallo Peter,

schön, dass Dir der Schrottplatz gefällt.
nice that you like the scrap yard.

With the width of the Liebherr loader and the interior dimensions of model gondolas, it will probably run on a "both-as-well". According to the sketch provided by you, the loader in HO would have to be 34.37 mm across the wheels. He is however 35.3 mm wide. Due to the necessary material thickness and a (hopefully) true-to-scale exterior dimensions, the interior dimensions of many models are getting smaller.
This is not noticeable in good models, unless one tries, for example, to represent a loading.

The loader does not fit into the gondola, as it should be possible. There is an overlap of 1.4 mm.
But as long as there is no direct comparison, you usually do not notice it.

    Grüße Tom

Thank you for your suggestions and tips, but partly yes and partly no.
The track plan is basically the same as that of my old JT, which is now the Fremo module "Jayville".
It works very well on the job and that's why I took it over and "purged it" and it's an acceptable compromise between my wishes and the circumstances.
Yes, with the lengths of the spurs is such a thing. However, this ultimately depends on the buildings that serve them and is therefore not yet determined. However, it is important that there is space for at least two 50 'cars at the upper connections and that there is enough space between the buildings so that they are clearly separated. I have tried a few variants in the replanning. In one, each connection had its own switch, that was too crowded. In another, the arch ran from the interchange yard to the industrial park in a larger radius and the tracks then diagonally. This design would almost have become, but in this variant, the possibility for a continuous traffic would no longer exist. That became an exclusion criterion. Since the operational possibilities are more important to me and these were not better than with the current plan I decided for this. The interchange yard could also be a staging yard or a simple board. But because I want to make the turn correctly with Lok or disassemble, which is the same as the operation of another connection, this part of the system is also designed.
There is no local driving another company. Maybe the underlying concept and the fictive history of society will explain the whole thing better.
The layout was inspired by various smaller shortlines in New England and especially by the Easthampton Branch of the Pioneer Valley Railroad.
The concept is: A very small shortline operates from an interchange yard an industrial area located on a former branch line of a Class I Railroad, which was sold by this to local owners / operators.
The background or fictional story is: this track was built as a branch line of the New Haven, then came to Penn Central and finally in 1976 to Conrail. In the 1980s, Conrail checked its existing from the predecessor companies route network and put in the result redundant or unprofitable for them routes quiet or puts them for sale. The same applies to the "Jayville Branch", which did not benefit Conrail, but was important for the local industry. At the same time, however, the Jayville Terminal "whistled" on the last hole. She ran from her original track network only a few 100 meters to a follower and made great losses every year. For the JT came with the sale of the Conrailstrecken the turn. In 1983 she leased the "Jayville Branch" and in 1990 she bought her. In the beginning, the JT operated the track with its old HH660 Bj.1939, ex. NH, which turned out to be too weak. This time came the rescue of the AT & SF. She sold cheap her CF7 converted 10 years ago. And so the JT acquired a CF7.
So the layout is in 1995 in Massachusetts and the connection to the "outside world" is now made via Conrail (and today via CSX). The JT represents an absolutely average US Short Line 1995 according to the definition of the American Short Line Railroad Association, namely up to max. 100 miles of track. I once rolled the available statistics and it came out. On average, in 1993, a US short line had 3.44 locomotives with a capacity of 1000 hp to 2500 hp, which were older than 20 years. It had an average length of 28.25 miles and carried 6228.77 truckloads per year. Broken down this means: a locomotive to 8.21 miles, per mile and year (250 days of operation) 220.49 carried carloads or per mile and day 0.888 carried carloads. The US modelers often count in Smiles, 1m (or 1Yard) = 1 mile (= 1 smile). I do it the same way. And so the entire layout and its operation is dimensioned. The JT has a track length of 7.94 m -> 7.94 smiles, it has 1 locomotive of 1500 hp (CF7) and thus carries 1750 wagonloads per year or 7 wagonloads per operating day. With an average of 2 wagons per customer and the service of on average half of the customers per operating day, the 7 customers. The track lengths, etc. are designed for the transport volume. In 1995, JT kept the old facilities in good condition and unused facilities were dismantled. At the beginning of the former branch a small yard with engine shed and office was built and the old CF7 is in a very good condition, since without them nothing works, or a replacement of Conrail would have to be rented. The customers have modernized their old buildings or built new ones.
The weather in New England does locos that are only outside, not good in the long run. Also, the necessary maintenance work must be carried out even in bad weather, so the shed, which is a modern, with profiled sheet-paved, industrial construction. The minimal yard was built on the site of a former sidings. The storage shed has room for maintenance of the facilities and the Caboose office for the necessary administrative and accounting work and changing room in one.
The Local of Conrail pushes (between the sessions :) ) the few entrance cars into the yard and pulls off the exit cars. The session then begins with the blocking of these cars and the making of the turn.
The parallel track systems stem from the development of the industrial park from a former branchline branch.
So that's how it came to this plan. Let's see what it is like implemented or changed.

  • Jayville Terminal Operation, Part 2

    Jetzt beginnt die eigendliche Session.
    Now the actual session begins.

First, sort the inbound cars in the interchange yard according to the blocking list and the train is made.

Move to the switch and then change it.

When switching in the interchange yard, the level crossing must be negotiated - stop in front of it.

There are 3 tracks available for sorting - so there is enough space.

Der Zug ist fertig zur Fahrt vom Interchange Yard zum Industrial Park.
The train is ready to move from the interchange yard to the industrial park.

    Ankunft im Industrial Park.
    Arrival at the industrial park.

Alle Trailing-Point-Anschlüsse in dieser Richtung werden bedient.
All trailing-point industries in this direction will be served.

Waste Oil & Chemicals - stop again in front of the road, then open the gate and then slowly with pace in the industry.

Als nächstes Jaycoat und Big Foods.
Next up is Jaycoat and Big Foods.

Then the scrap yard - again stop in front of the gate, open the gate and then with walking speed in the industry.

After the scrap yards have been served, the loco moves around the train.

Now the trailing-point industries of the other direction will be serviced - in this session only Commercial Distributing.

The train back to the interchange yard is ready and on the way to the yard - stop again in front of the road.

Arrival at the interchange yard. Since the loco can only move around six 50'-cars, the seven cars must be moved around in two sets. To do this, the last car of the train will be uncoupled in front of the first turnout of the yard and then the first six cars will be pulled into the track.

The locomotive moves around the front part of the train and attaches to the last car, moves out of the switch, attaches to the train from the back, and then places the penultimate car on the third yard track. The last car is put back in front of the first switch of the yard and the locomotive moves again to the front of the train. Then this is pushed back to the last car, this is coupled and then everything is pulled together into the track. Now the locomotive can move around the train completely and the car parked on the third yard track can be put back to the others. Finally, the cars are pushed into the track, the locomotive moves into the house - ready.

Diese Operating Session dauerte einschließlich des Fotografieren 80 entspannte Minuten. Wow !
This operating session lasted 80 minutes, including taking pictures. Wow!

Give operation a try and your layout seems to be bigger - It's fun !

  • Hallo Fabian,

During the journey from the Interchange Yard to the Industrial Park, you will of course be stopped before entering the two level crossings.
Arriving at the Industrial Park, the train with the first car stops in front of the switch to the first industry to be served - Jaycoat / Big Foods. Unfortunately, the Conductor did not really look at the notes and ignored the off-spot car at Big Foods. Therefore, in the course of servicing this industry, the train must push back a car length on the main track and consequently the Conductor has to run 200 yards extra ;( .

First, both cars are picked up at Big Foods.

The reefer gets on the train and the boxcar returns to Big Foods. Furthermore, a boxcar and a Covered Hopper are to be delivered to Jaycoat. The cars for Jaycoat are already right. The big food car is lined up in front of it and then all three cars are put on the corresponding spots.

Scrap Yard and Waste Oil & Chemicals will be served next. For this, the train is pulled into the runaround. Behind the two empty gondolas for Scrap Yard is uncoupled and then moved forward to behind the second turnout of the runaround. After changing this turnout, the scrap yard will be served first.

Next, Waste Oil & Chemicals will be served. There, only a boxcar has to be picked up. When operating this industry is right in front of the gate a road to cross. At the road must be stopped, the gate must be opened, the conductor secures the road and then can be moved to the grounds. When leaving, it is then again moved across the street and then closed the gate.

Then behind the connection switch first stopped again and put them back into basic position. Afterwards the train will be bypassed with the already picked up cars via the Siding of the Runaround. The collected cars are parked on the Main Track in the runaround and thus the first part of the turn is completed. All trailing point industries are serviced. Now the locomotive can bypass its train and then serve all the other industries that are then trailing point industries.

  • Teil 3
    part 3

First, the Covered Hopper is picked up on the Team Track, then it is moved from the front to the train and to the remaining cars, which were already blocked in the Interchange Yard, and coupled. Now the two boxcars and the covered hopper can be moved back to the team track and the blue boxcar (weathered by Chicagomen64 ^^ ) can be put on the ramp.

Next, the Warehouse Track is served, where the Warehouse of the Commercial Distribution Co. and the Cold Storage Warehouse are located. In this session, only one boxcar needs to be delivered to Charging Gate 2 of Commercial Distributing Co. For this purpose, the train is pushed so far on the main track that the third car is free behind the Warehouse Track Turnout and can be moved with the two first cars in the track.

The empty Covered Hopper is then returned to the train and the train is ready for the return trip to the Interchange Yard.

Then it can be moved back to the interchange yard. It is stopped again before moving over the two level crossings.

In the interchange yard is moved to the main track, the locomotive is uncoupled and moves into the house and the cars remain standing on the main track. "They are usually picked up by CSX Local at night, which also provides other cars for next-day service there, but today the guest locomotive continues to transport the cars."
The cars, together with the accompanying Car Cards and Waybills, enter the empty interchange boxes of the previous cars to be delivered. These are put away and the next two interchange boxes come in turn, the content of which is again provided on the main track for the next session.

    Feierabend.
    End of working day.

The session was great fun for both of us and there will be some repetitions.
At the JT further detailing work is to be done, primarily it will be the scrap yard, and also the vehicles used are customization of the label and some weathering.
But all gradually. The layout is ready and everything works absolutely without problems.

  • Hallo Ronald,
