Von Terry Harrison unter dem Betreff: Proto emulating the model scene
-----
In talking to my son the other day, he advises me that the big 4 Class ones are going to go the way we model rr?ers do. That is run our trains with just an engineer.
They have in the works to eliminate the conductor, starting with road trains. They are deemed ?dead weigh on the left side?. The powers to be feel that these conductors are getting paid to do nothing on road trains.
He gives the example that on the NS, between Toledo, Oh & Chicago, there are about 100 trains per day roughly. IF only 3 trains have breakdowns, dragging equip., hot box, etc., then that is only 3% of the trains traveled. So 97% are trouble free and don?t need the ?dead weight?.
My son isn?t happy about this as that means he has added responsibility in the right hand seat plus the ride is by himself. He feels sorry for anyone out there that has the hopes of making a career on the road and to support their families with less then 10 years marked up.
Anyone heard anything more on this subject, chime in.
Next stop, robo trains with NO crew.
